Buckhanan, Borjas receive All-Conference honors

Hobbs, NM - The Red River Athletic Conference announced the 2012 Women's Basketball All-Conference team and two members of the Lady Mustangs were among those honored.

Senior, Simone Buckhanan is one of two representing the Lady Mustangs in the RRAC All-Conference selection. Buckhanan, a Guard from Albuquerque, is a second team all-conference selection for the 2011-2012 season after receiving Honorable Mention last year. The Albuquerque native averaged 17.3 points per game, and shot .424 from the field, leading the Mustangs in both categories. Buckhanan also led the team in assists with 3.03 per game and second in rebounding for the team with an average of 4.4 per game.

Buckhanan played two seasons for USW averaging 14.3 points per game, 39.8 percent from the field, 4.1 rebounds per game, and averaged 3 assists per game. During the 2011-2012 season, Buckhanan saw a career high and team record of 45 points per game as well as took home RRAC Player of the Week honors twice.

Melody Borjas, a Guard from El Paso Texas, received Honorable Mention. During the season Borjas average 9.53 points per game and shot .377 percent from the field. The El Paso native had the highest three point percentage for the Mustangs at .376, averaged 4.13 rebounds per game, as well as 1.6 assists per game.

Borjas was an original member of the inaugural USW Basketball team in 2008. During her four year tenure with USW she averaged a total of 8.7 points per game, 2.9 rebounds per game, and tacked on 1.7 assists per game. During her senior year, Borjas sank her 1000th career point for the Lady Mustangs and finished her career with a total of 1045 total points.
