Lubbock, TX – The Mustangs completed their fifth game in five days on Tuesday as they split a double header with #4 Lubbock Christian University taking the first game 14-4 before dropping the second 13-4 at Hays Field.

LCU jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning of the day off of Mustang starter Reyes Melendez, but USW (10-19) answered back with four runs of their own in the top half of the second and 10 more in the next five innings to cruise to a 14-4 victory in chilly, rainy conditions in Lubbock, TX. Melendez worked two innings, giving up four earned runs on six hits, while walking two, and striking out one. The Mustang bullpen shut the door for the LCU Chaps as USW's Andrew Felix threw two scoreless innings allowing just two hits to earn the victory for the ‘Stangs. Felix (2-3) needed just 23 pitches in his two innings of work to get his second win on the season. Rene Hernandez threw the final three frames, allowing one hit and no runs, while striking out three Chap hitters.

Josh Cappello led the Mustang offense, going 2-5 at the plate with four runs batted in, along with Eric Alvarez in the DH spot who had two hits of his own along with three RBI. The University of the Southwest combined for nine hits in the game and drew 12 walks while allowing just two of their own. Seven of the nine Mustang starters recorded a hit in the victory.

The Chaps (18-10) offense woke up in game two of the double header as they opened the game up with a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. USW starter Andrew Henning (1-2), went two innings allowing five runs, three earned, on five hits, taking the loss for the Mustangs. Lubbock Christian added another run in the second inning giving the Chaps starter, Lester Lugo, all he needed. The righty logged five innings in the victory and holding the Mustang offense to just four runs, three earned, on four hits and five strike outs. Lugo ran into a jam in the third, allowing three Mustang runs while allowing three of his four walks in the inning.

Mustang freshman, Steven Rodriguez, recorded two of the four RBI in the game for USW, as six Mustangs would combine for six hits in the loss. Eric Alvarez and Omar Villar were the only other players to drive in runs.

The split puts the Mustang's at 10-19 on the season heading into the weekend series against Texas College. The Steers sit one place ahead of the USW in the RRAC standings as they come to Hobbs, NM with a 6-7-1 conference record while the Mustangs are 5-7 in the RRAC. First pitch is scheduled for 12 noon MST Friday, March 23 at Jake Williams Field.
