
Odessa, TX –The temperatures were hot but the Mustang offense could not match and fell to The University of Texas of the Permian Basin. UTPB, NCAA DII, pounded out 19 hits on the day and 23 runs to sweep the University of the Southwest 15-2 and 8-4 in Odessa, TX.
UTPB took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning of the day on the Mustangs. Mustang starting pitcher, Hugo Fernandez, allowed nine runs (all earned) on ten hits in his 2.1 innings of work. Alfonso Alonzo came in, giving up nine hits and six runs, all of which were earned. Alonzo found a groove in the fifth where he did not allow any runs the final two frames.
Junior, Brayden Branson led the Mustang offense where he went 3-3 at the plate along with one of the two RBI in the contest. Derelle Owens, Josh Cappello, Eric Alvarez, and Steven Rodriguez each added a hit of their own in the first game.
The Falcon bats stayed hot in the second game as they jumped out to an 8-0 lead after the first three innings of the contest. Andrew Henning got the start on the mound for USW where he allowed seven runs (all earned) on eight hits in his 2.2 innings. Clinton Graham followed Henning into the fifth inning when Rene Hernandez came in relief and threw a no hitter in the following two innings with four strike outs.
The Mustang offense combined for eight hits in the second game. Two of those hits came from freshman right fielder, Steven Rodriguez. Six other Mustangs recorded a hit each to push across the four Mustang runs in the game.
The Mustangs are back in action with a weekend RRAC series against conference powerhouse and nationally ranked Northwood University. A double header is scheduled for Friday, March 30th with the first pitch being thrown at 12 noon MST. The third game of the series will be played Saturday at 12 noon MST.
