Mustang Seniors 2012
Baseball - Sat, Apr. 7, 2012

Hobbs, NM – It could not have gone any better for the 11 seniors playing their final game at Jake Williams Field on Saturday. The Mustangs (15-25, 10-11) wrapped up the weekend series with Huston-Tillotson taking the third and final game 20-7 and sweeping the series for their first three game RRAC sweep of the season.

After playing two games that were decided by one and two runs on Friday, the Mustang offense erupted for 21 hits on the afternoon that plated 20 runs for the USW in the contest. Joshua Cappello led the offensive display as he collected 4 hits including a triple on the afternoon that recorded 4 RBI for the USW. Ysidoro Reyna had 3 hits of his own, all doubles, that drove in 5 Mustang runs. The offense would waste no time jumping out to a lead as the score stood 12-1 after the first three innings of play. It wouldn't stop there as the hitters added eight more runs over the next three innings to push across a run in all seven innings as the game was shortened due to the 10 run rule. Omar Villar would cap off the day with a towering home run to deep left field in the bottom of the fifth that gave the Mustangs their 20thand final run.

Ernesto Torres (3-5) collected his second straight victory as the senior worked 5 quality innings allowing 3 runs (all earned) on 8 hits. Andrew Henning and Reyes Melendez would log the final two innings for the Mustangs as all three seniors played their entire 4 year career for the University of the Southwest.

Along with Cappello and Reyna, Martin Adams would add 3 hits while Derelle Owens, Frank Arellano, and Nathan Paz each added two a piece.

The sweep puts the Mustangs at 14-25 overall and 10-11 in the RRAC as the sit in 7thplace in the recent standings. They will now hit the road on Friday as they open a three game conference series in Waxahachie, TX against RRAC opponent Southwestern Assemblies of God University.
