Head Coach

Coach Koontz enters his fourth year at the University of the Southwest as the head coach for the Men's and Women's Soccer programs. He brings a strong background in the Texas and New Mexico youth systems which will serve as strong resources for recruiting. Koontz was the Director of Coaching for the Lubbock Lonestar Soccer Club and the coach for Lonestar Men's PASL Indoor team. His U17 & U18 teams from Lubbock competed in the Dallas Classic League and the Lake Highlands Girls Classic League respectively. Coach Koontz has also coached/trained the Texas Tech Men's and Women's club soccer teams as well as various youth soccer clubs in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. From 2002 to 2004 he was the head soccer coach at the Arizona Sports Ranch (Paradise Valley, AZ) and since 2007 Coach Koontz has been a member of the New Mexico Olympic Development coaching staff.

As a player, Koontz played for the Texas Tech men's soccer team from ‘94-'96 and the Lubbock CL USASA Open Cup teams from ‘94-'98. From 2001-2004 Koontz played with the Arizona Sahuaros, then D3 MLS affiliate of the LA Galaxy, and was named captain in 2002. In 2003 they won the NPSL National Championship against Utah and were the runner up in 2004.

Coach Koontz is a graduate of Texas Tech University with a Bachelor in Exercise Sports and Sports Science. He holds USSF "A" Coaching License and is a member of NSCAA.

Serving as the Women's Assistant Coach, Alex Lopez looks forward to being once again a part of the University of the Southwest soccer program. Lopez is an alumnus from USW and knows what it is like to be a part of a successful team. Originally from southern California, Lopez came out to USW in hopes of completing her college degree while also being involved in sports.

In her college career as a Mustang, Lopez was a member of the USW Women's soccer program from '08-'10.  During those successful seasons, the Lady Mustangs made the conference tournament and also set conference records. As a goalkeeper, Lopez was ranked 4th in the conference for saves and 19th in the nation. Coach Lopez will be primarily working with goalkeepers and recruiting efforts for future students and student –athletes.

Lopez graduated in May 2011 from USW with a Bachelor in Arts and Sciences, majoring in Physical Education with a minor in Sport Management. She is currently working on her Masters in Business Administration. Lopez serves as the Online Program Advisor in the Office of Enrollment Services here at USW and is also the Women's Resident Director on campus.
