Chevis Thompson entered the 2011-12 season as his first season as Head Men's Basketball Coach and his third season with University of the Southwest. Thompson joined USW during the 2009-10 basketball season and served as the Associate Head Coach for the Men's Basketball team. During 2009-10 at USW, Thompson helped lead the men's team to the most wins in the school's history and their second consecutive trip to the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament. Also during his time for USW, he coached two All- Conference Players and one All-American.
During the 2010-11 season, Thompson joined the full-time coaching staff as the Head Women's Basketball Coach. During that season Thompson helped the Lady Mustangs continue their success by going to their third consecutive conference tournament in three years. During the 2010-11 season, Thompson had the privilege to coach three All-Conference players along with the Red River's Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Year.
Thompson's coaching career began at Missouri Baptist - where he served as an assistant coach with the women's basketball program. As assistant, he helped lead the Lady Spartans to the second round of the American Midwest Conference Tournament. During that same year, Thompson had the privilege to coach two All-conference players and one Honorable Mention All-American.
Thompson is a native of St. Louis, MO, where he spent extensive time playing for AAU powerhouse, the St. Louis Eagles. Thompson graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Denver, Co. While at TJHS, he was an All-Conference Player, Defensive Player of the Year and Honorable Mention All-State. That same year, Thomas Jefferson recorded their first City League Championship and advanced to the Final Eight in the Colorado State Tournament. His collegiate career concluded at Martin Methodist College in Pulaski, TN, where he led the team in assists and steals.
Thompson helped MMC reach their first ever Conference Championship in school history and an automatic bid to the National Tournament.
Thompson earned his bachelor's degree in psychology from Martin Methodist College and his master's in sports management from Missouri Baptist University.
Jacoby Taylor joined the USW family in August 2004 as a student. In 2008, Taylor graduated with a bachelor's of business administration. He became part of the USW staff in May 2010 as a recruiting specialist.
Shortly after starting his new duties as a recruiting specialist, he accepted an additional role to serve as Assistant Coach for Men's Basketball.
This will be Coach Taylor's second year with the Mustangs; he led the 2010-2011 JV team to a new USW record for the most wins at the University of the Southwest. Taylor's previous coaching experiences are two years coaching football at Highland Jr. High in Hobbs, and three years coaching football at Hobbs freshman school. He primarily coached defensive backs and wide receivers.
