Coach Koontz enters his third year at the University of the Southwest as the head coach for the Men's and Women's Soccer programs. He brings a strong background in the Texas and New Mexico youth systems which will serve as strong resources for recruiting. Koontz was the Director of Coaching for the Lubbock Lonestar Soccer Club and the coach for Lonestar Men's PASL Indoor team. His U17 & U18 teams from Lubbock competed in the Dallas Classic League and the Lake Highlands Girls Classic League respectively. Coach Koontz has also coached/trained the Texas Tech Men's and Women's club soccer teams as well as various youth soccer clubs in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. From 2002 to 2004 he was the head soccer coach at the Arizona Sports Ranch (Paradise Valley, AZ) and since 2007 Coach Koontz has been a member of the New Mexico Olympic Development coaching staff.
As a player, Koontz played for the Texas Tech men's soccer team from ‘94-'96 and the Lubbock CL USASA Open Cup teams from ‘94-'98. From 2001-2004 Koontz played with the Arizona Sahuaros, then D3 MLS affiliate of the LA Galaxy, and was named captain in 2002. In 2003 they won the NPSL National Championship against Utah and were the runner up in 2004.
Coach Koontz is a graduate of Texas Tech University with a Bachelor in Exercise Sports and Sports Science. He holds USSF "A" Coaching License and is a member of NSCAA.
